Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers!)
What denomination is Cowboy Church?
Although Cowboy Church is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Texas Fellowship of Cowboy Churches, it functions as an interdenominational fellowship gladly welcoming anyone who has accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, been scripturally baptized by immersion, and accepts the basic teachings of Christianity into its membership.
Do I have to be a cowboy to attend Cowboy Church?
Absolutely not! Although many cowboys, cowgirls, and other horse enthusiasts attend Cowboy Church, our members come from every background and walk of life. If you would rather wear jeans than dress up, if you enjoy country or blue grass or gospel music, if you like rubbing elbows with plain down to earth people, and if you want clear simple sermons you can actually understand, you will love Cowboy Church.
How many people attend Cowboy Church?
In the building we are currently meeting in (which is small) we have over 235 people regularly attending.
What happens at a Cowboy Church worship service?
A typical Cowboy Church worship service consists of a couple of hymns, a couple of songs from our professional quality band, an occasional testimony, and a 20 to 30 minute sermon that won't leave you scratching your head.
What time are the services?
10:30 a.m. Sunday morning but feel free to come early to pray before the service or just catch up on all your friends' news from the past few days!
How should I dress at Cowboy Church?
The majority of people at Cowboy Church will wear boots and jeans, many will wear hats or caps, some will wear shorts, and a few will wear suits or dresses. All of these are appropriate. The bottom line: wear whatever is comfortable to you. There is no pretense here. The person in shorts and a ball cap is as welcome as the one in a suit, and the really neat thing is, no one will notice the difference. At Cowboy Church we make ourselves at home with God and each other.
What does Cowboy Church believe?
We believe the Bible is the word of God.
We believe in one God that exists in three persons. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died to save men from their sins.
We believe that men are saved by grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ.
We believe that baptism is the means by which people are to publically profess their faith in Christ and identify themselves with his death, burial, and resurrection.
How is Cowboy Church organized and how does it conduct business?
At Cowboy Church, we believe that those who get their hands dirty should also be the ones making the decisions. Toward that end, Cowboy Church is organized around ministry teams. Each team has its own budget and makes its own decisions. However, each team is accountable to one or more Lay Pastors, who in turn are accountable to the Pastor and Elders. Each year the church elects one Elder who, along with the pastor and the other elders, provide oversight of all the church’s ministries.
How Can I become a member of Cowboy Church?
There are three ways to become a member of Cowboy Church:
At Cowboy Church, we do not require people to walk down in front of the church to request membership. Instead, we use “blue sheets”. These are simple forms that you can fill out to request membership in Cowboy Church by statement, letter, or baptism. These forms may then be dropped in either of our offering birdhouses. The Pastor or Lay Pastor will contact you to confirm your information and address any questions you may have. Blue sheets are always available on the tables where you make your offerings.
-
By statement of faith. This means that you have accepted Christ and been biblically baptized by immersion (i.e. dunked), but are unable to acquire a letter of church membership from another church. In this case, we will simply accept your word that you are a baptized believer and add you to our membership.
-
By letter. This means that you have accepted Christ, been biblically baptized by immersion (i.e. dunked), and are a member of another church. In such a case, you may request that Cowboy Church write to your previous church and request that they transfer your church membership to us.
-
By baptism. This means that you have accepted Christ as your savior and desire to be baptized. Because deciding to follow Christ is such a significant decision, Cowboy Church does not believe that any person can make this choice for another. For this reason, Cowboy Church does NOT accept infant baptism.
Does Cowboy Church have programs for my children?
Yes. Although Cowboy Church does not have a traditional Sunday School, we do have a nursery for your children 3 and under, at both Sunday services and a quality Children’s Church program for your children ages 4 to grade level 6 during our 10:30 worship service.
How do I express my desire to become a member of Cowboy Church?
Please fill out the attendance form in the church bulletin you received while walking into worship. Our Pastor or one of the lay pastors will contact you to answer any questions you have and to assist you.
